Men’s health month in 2025 is being observed this month, specifically around this week which includes Father’s Day on the 15th June.  This month is dedicated to raising awareness about men’s health issues and encouraging men to take proactive steps towards a healthier lifestyle.  It serves as a reminder for men and boys to prioritise their health by making a doctor’s appointment when needed and adopting healthier habits.

Several diseases and health conditions tend to affect men more commonly or severely than women, due to a combination of biological, behavioral, and social factors. Here are the main ones:

Cardiovascular Diseases

Heart Disease (e.g., coronary artery disease, heart attacks)

  • Leading cause of death for men globally.
  • Risk factors: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, poor diet, lack of exercise.

 Mental Health Disorders

  • Depression and Anxiety
    • Often underdiagnosed in men due to stigma and less likelihood to seek help.
    • Men are more likely to show irritability or anger instead of sadness.
  • Suicide
    • Men die by suicide at significantly higher rates than women, especially in middle and older age.

Cancers Common in Men

  • Prostate Cancer
    • One of the most common cancers in men.
    • Risk increases with age; often slow-growing.
  • Lung Cancer
    • Strongly associated with smoking.
    • High mortality rate.
  • Colorectal Cancer
    • Affects both genders, but risk is slightly higher in men.
  • Testicular Cancer
    • Most common in younger men (ages 15–35).
    • High survival rate with early detection.

Alcohol and Drug Abuse

  • Men are more likely to use and misuse alcohol and drugs.
  • Leads to liver disease, cancer, and mental health issues.
