Advice for our Patients During the Current Heatwave πŸ₯΅

We’re receiving a high number of calls about swollen ankles, feeling faint, tiredness, rashes, and general discomfort in the heat. These symptoms are often a normal response to high temperatures and are usually not a cause for concern β€” but we understand they can be worrying.

Most cases can be managed at home, and the NHS has excellent up-to-date guidance to help you stay safe and well:
πŸ”— Heatwave: How to Cope in Hot Weather – NHS

Common symptoms we’re hearing about include:

  • Swollen ankles or feet (especially after travel or sitting still for long periods)
  • Light-headedness or fatigue
  • Rashes or flushed skin
  • Heat-related headaches
  • Trouble sleeping

These are usually temporary and improve with:
βœ… Keeping cool indoors
βœ… Drinking plenty of fluids (avoiding alcohol)
βœ… Elevating your feet when resting
βœ… Taking cool showers or using damp cloths
βœ… Wearing light, loose clothing

However, you should seek medical advice if you or someone you care for:

  • Is struggling to breathe or speak
  • Has chest pain
  • Becomes unusually confused or drowsy
  • Has signs of heatstroke (e.g. no sweating, fast breathing, temperature over 40Β°C)

Please help us prioritise urgent calls by using self-care and NHS online guidance wherever safe to do so.

If you’re concerned and need advice, we’re here to help β€” but thank you for helping us manage demand during this hot spell.
